BUGGATTI VEYRON CRASHING INTO A LAKE


After several pictures and a made up story of how this 1.6 million dollar Bugatti Veyron crashed in to a lake, we now have video proof of the accident! The owner, Andy House claimed that he was distracted by a low flying pelican that caused him to crash into the lake. This video shows no evidence of a pelican, and an updated report claims that he had dropped his cell phone. Hmm…the whole story is ironic because Andy House owns Performance Auto Sales in Lufkin, Texas and the company specializes in repair and restore of crashed exotics! Is it possible he did it on purpose for some extra promotion of his company? I highly doubt it since the Bugatti Veyron is one of the most expensive cars in the world. MANSORV BUGATTI VEYRON LINEA VINCERO



Vincero is the name of the latest car modified by refining specialist Mansory, an incredible project based on a Bugatti Veyron. Veyron was already one of the most powerful cars in the world and it’s stock version sets standards in terms of price, top speed and engine power leaving every competitor far behind. But Mansory wanted to make a unique version of this car and they prepared a lot of visually changes for this Bugatti. The front side of this car received a comprehensive face lift with modified wings, a shorter hood and an aggressive front apron with LED daytime running lights. A special “V” on the front side of the car draws even more attention to this car and brings a special tribute to the name Vincero. The new side skirts connect the two sides of this car visually and aerodynamically.


MANSORY BUGATTI VEYRON VINCERO



Mansory hasn’t revealed any information about their latest project: a modified Bugatti Veyron Vincero but the exotic car dealer Prestige Cars from United Arab Emirates already posted this car for sale. According to them only three examples have been built. From the pictures we can see that the Veyron-based Vincero features a carbon fiber hood and engine cover, an awesome paint job that’s perfectly matched with a set of black alloy wheels and a lot of other carbon fiber elements. The car’s interior was also improved a lot and “luxury” is a word too small to describe the comfort from this ride. The guys from Mansory reupholstered the interior in black and white with carbon fiber trim.

Yesterday Maruti released the new version of the Maruti Wagon-R. I should say new versions, actually. There are two, the first, a redesigned Wagon-R; and the second, that redesigned Wagon-R with a factory-fitted LPG kit.

With the Swift positioned above, and the Alto and Zen below, the Wagon-R was finding it tough going in the last year. It just looked too boxy. Spacious it definitely was. What it needed was some real glamour, and without doing the horrible jobs it earlier did on the 800 and the Omni, Maruti decided to really, really, spice things up.

And it has! The new Maruti Wagon-R gets a much more pretty front grill, better looking lights, bumpers and colours. It works, definitely. A few of the photos - sure it's more the photographer than the Wagon-R - really makes you want to think again about purchasing a Wagon-R.

What about the LPG-kitted Wagon-R Duo? Let me me one thing clear first - I thought LPG was banned in India as an automobile fuel. So what gives? I have no idea. Anyway, if Maruti launches a Wagon-R with an LPG kit, it should be legal, and I might be a bit outdated. With the LPG kit and cylinder fitted, the Wagon-R becomes a brilliant dual fuel vehicle. Way to go. For the redesigned Wagon-R, price remains the same as earlier, but for the dual fuel Duo, you will have to pay an extra Rs 20,000. Worth it, I guess.

Maruti bosses said that the prices of the three petrol variants of the Wagon R range between Rs 3.23 lakh to Rs 3.72 lakh. The LPG -petrol Duo Wagon R is priced between Rs 3.4 lakh and Rs 3.6 lakh.

And the LPG cylinder should be sage. They are imported from USA and Poland and certified by the department of explosives as well as the ARAI. The tank - cylinder for LPG has a “toridal” design. Don't ask me what it is - but it seems to optimize the luggage space available in the Wagon-R.

The car can easily switch between petrol and LPG. Which means that the Maruti can easily travel 800 kilometers once both petrol and LPG are topped up.

The LPG Duo Wagon-R should easily provide a much cheaper running cost than running on petrol. We will update the page with the actual differences in running costs once we get to know it a bit better.

The new Maruti WagonR is available in eight colours, of which five are new: Metallic Passion Red, Metallic Forest Flush (Green), Metallic Royale Gold, Metallic Ocean Blue and Bahamas Biege.

And now allow me to ruin your enthusiasm a bit. You think the Maruti Wagon-R looks good? Take a look at the Wagon-Rs available in Japan. These are almost exactly the same as the Maruti ones, but a bit more careful design has actually made them desirable vehicles.

And then we have the Chevrolet Wagon R MW. I believe this is available only in Japan. There is this alliance between GM and Suzuki, and this one takes the cake and runs away with it. It looks like a little truck! I am smitten by this one, and is the only reason why I haven't plonked any money down on Maruti's counter for a Wagon-R Duo by now. Anyway, those two are not coming to India, so if you really love the Chevy Wagon-R, why don't you get a reliable used Wagon-R for a lakh or two and spend a couple ten thousands remodelling the front? I think that will be worth it.

JAPAN PREPARES NEW ELECTRIC CAR FOR LAUNCH IN 2013


Tokyo-based Keio University (which happens to be my alma mater) is ready to take Sim-Drive, its eco-friendly vehicle technology, to another level. The university announced over the weekend that it will collaborate with a total of 34 Japanese companies and municipalities, including powerhouses such as Mitsubishi Motors or Isuzu, to release a new electric car.


The aim of the consortium is to develop and mass-produce an electric car prototype that’s based on the Sim-Drive technology. Each participating company and institution is financing the project with $220,000. If things go as planned, the futuristic, four-motor (one for the end of each axle) car will be able to drive 300km on a single charge. This driving range is about twice that of electric cars that are available currently.


The consortium expects a first prototype to be ready this summer. Mass-production (meaning around 100,000 vehicles) is scheduled to begin in 2013. Price-wise, the final version is expected to be on the same level as gasoline-powered cars (excluding batteries).

MAHINDRA ACQUIRES MAJORITY STAKE IN REVA ELECTRIC CAR COMPANY


Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., on Wednesday, announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Bangalore-based REVA Electric Car Co Ltd. Following this, REVA Electric Car Co Ltd. will be renamed Mahindra REVA Electric Vehicle Co Ltd.


Post-the buyout, the board of Mahindra REVA has been re-constituted under the chairmanship of Pawan Goenka, President Automotive & Farm Equipment Sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra. The new board includes five nominees from Mahindra & Mahindra, two from the Maini family and one from AEV LLC, California (co-founders of REVA). An independent director will be added to the board subsequently. Mr Chetan Maini will continue to play a leading role in Mahindra REVA as Chief of Technology and Strategy, the release adds.


Under its core sustainable mobility initiative, Mahindra has been working for the last 10 years on developing green technologies and has demonstrated diesel hybrid technology on the Scorpio and hydrogen Alfa three wheelers. Mahindra has a pilot fleet operating with 100 per cent bio-diesel and was the first to launch micro-hybrid technology in India with around 50,000 such micro-hybrids on the road today. In EVs (electric vehicles), over and above the electric three-wheeler Bijlee developed in 1999, it is also currently working on an electric version of its mini-truck Maxximo. Mahindra REVA’s EV technology will be adapted for these and other M&M vehicles. Access to strong EV technology will strengthen Mahindra’s other current sustainability initiatives, the release says.


REVA is currently marketing its products in 24 countries across the world with an overall vehicle population of over 3500. REVA recently premiered its next generation electric car models, the NXR and NXG. Mahindra REVA will now have access to Mahindra’s vehicle development technology and distribution network, significantly enhancing its ability to launch a state-of-the-art electric vehicle for global markets.


With issues such as climate change and carbon footprint taking centre stage globally, eco-friendly transportation becomes the need of the hour. Mahindra already has an established sustainable mobility solutions programme and our association with REVA will only help us further expand our green footprint both in India and overseas,” the relese quotes Anand Mahindra, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Mahindra & Mahindra, as saying.



IT'S ALIVE! GM'S NEXT ELECTRIC CAR TO BE UNVEILED IN DETROIT


    A few months ago, CNN reported General Motors was working on a plug-in hybrid vehicle. At the time, that news tidbit (possibly a PR leak), was lost beneath the anti-GM tide swelled by the film "Who Killed the Electric Car," and thus couldn't shield the company from media-flush environmentalists' jerked knees. But now, it's the General who could wind up laughing all the way to the green room.

 News reports indicate GM is planning to unveil a prototype hybrid-EV that employs a internal-combustion engine as a generator to extend the range of its rechargeable batteries.


Sure, It sounds like a typical hybrid, but most believe the prototype will have plug-in capability — which could allow for net mileage in the triple digits. Such a release would give GM a PR win against Toyota, which is planning a plug-in of its own, according to reports. Not much else is known about the system, but it'll likely be a headliner at the Detroit auto show in January.


It might even get its own ad campaign, possibly featuring a chastened Ed Bagley Jr. dumping a cooler of wheatgrass juice over the head of Rick Wagoner. Or something. – Mike Spinelli.

The Aviator was introduced in the market as the third offering from Honda in the scooter segment. Since this scooter is powered by the same engine that runs in the Activa or the Dio, there is nothing exceptionally different in its performance. However, completely new looks with some added features make the Aviator stand apart from the competition.

An unusual and futuristic design philosophy, which Honda has adapted from the latest version of the Fireblade, adds a touch of muscle to the scooter and targets the adult male buyers. This comes as the most important change in the Aviator as compared to the Activa, which is targeted more towards the female population and the Dio which is more of a youth friendly vehicle.

   Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt Ltd unveiled on Monday, Aviator, a new premium automatic scooter, with a sale target of 1 Lakh units during 2008-09.The new product, fourth from the stable of Honda in scooter segment after Activa, Dio and Eterno, is set for a national launch on March 6.The product would cost Rs 40,283 at ex-showroom price in Chennai, HMSI President and CEO Shinji Aoyama told reporters during the launch in Chennai.

   The introduction of Aviator, targeting businessmen and professionals in the age group of 30 to 39 years, was a step ahead to consolidate the HMSI’s position in the automatic scooter segment, where it already holds the numero uno status with 54 per cent market share, he said. Aoyama said the HMIS, the 100 per cent owned 2-wheeler subsidiary of the Hondo Motor Company, was the fastest growing company, crossing the three-million customer mark in November 2007. It had set a sale target of 8.8 lakh units — 6.1 lakh scooters and 2.7 lakh motor cycles — and 11 per cent market share, against 8 per cent the previous year, in the two-wheeler segment for the current financial year, he said. HMSI Head-Sales and Marketing N K Rattan said the company, the fourth largest in two-wheeler segment, was planning to sell ten lakh units — seven lakh scooters and 3 lakh motor cycles — during 2008-09.

Microsoft Surface Computer is the first in a new category of surface computing products from Microsoft that will ?break down traditional barriers between people and technology?. It is the next generation of computer interfaces those offer multi-touch technology. Unlike most touchscreens, Surface computer can respond to more than one touch at a time. During a demonstration with a reporter, Mark Bolger, the Surface Computing group's marketing director, "dipped" his finger in an on-screen paint palette, then dragged it across the screen to draw a smiley face. Then he used all 10 fingers at once to give the face a full head of hair. So, forget the keyboard and mouse: The next generation of computer interfaces will be hands-on.

MULTI- TOUCH TECHNOLY

    Microsoft's new "surface" computer is demonstrated. Microsoft Surface, which has a 30-inch display under a hard-plastic tabletop, allows a group of people to touch and move objects on screen at once.

SURFACE COMPUTING TABLE

    Microsoft notes four main components being important in Surface's interface: direct interaction, multi-touch contact, a multi-user experience, and object recognition.

     Direct interaction refers to the user's ability to simply reach out and touch the interface of an application in order to interact with it, without the need for a mouse or keyboard. Multi-touch contact refers to the ability to have multiple contact points with an interface, unlike with a mouse, where there is only one cursor. Multi-user is a benefit of multi-touch—several people can orient themselves on different sides of the surface to interact with an application simultaneously. Object recognition refers to the device's ability to recognize the presence and orientation of tagged objects placed on top of it.

SURFACE COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY


There are four types in  this technology:

 SCREEN

        A diffuser turns the Surface's acrylic tabletop into a large horizontal "multitouch" screen, capable of processing multiple inputs from multiple users. The Surface can also recognize objects by their shapes or by reading coded "domino" tags.

INFRARED

Surface's "machine vision" operates in the near-infrared spectrum, using an 850-nanometer-wavelength LED light source aimed at the screen. When objects touch the tabletop, the light reflects back and is picked up by multiple infrared cameras with a net resolution of 1280 x 960.

CPU

     Surface uses many of the same components found in everyday desktop computers. A Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM and a 256MB graphics card. Wireless communication with devices on the surface is handled using WiFi and Bluetooth antennas (future versions may incorporate RFID or Near Field Communications). The underlying operating system is a modified version of Microsoft Vista.


PROJECTOR

    Microsoft's Surface uses the same DLP light engine found in many rear-projection HDTVs. The footprint of the visible light screen, at 1024 x 768 pixels, is actually smaller than the invisible overlapping infrared projection to allow for better recognition at the edges of the screen.

    Microsoft’s Bill Gates is pitching table-top computer system dubbed ‘The Surface’ for between $5,000 and $10,000. The Surface is touch-sensitive and interacts with mobile phones, digital cameras an other objects that are placed on it.

The system requires extensive customization and is aimed at highly trafficked businesses like restaurants and hotels.

I don’t know how many know of Microsoft’s new product Surface. If not, it is basically a coffee table computer. I love computers and gadgets, but this seems a little bit extreme in a residence (I can see some cool commercial uses). Tata Indigo CS Description :

Compact Sedan, sporting look, 1193cc and 1405cc engines in its petrol and diesel variants respectively, the new Indigo CS delivers even better mileage than its thrifty predecessor. The shorter length translates to a better parking experience in cramped urban spaces, and also produces a tighter driving experience.



The new Indigo CS, at a length of 3988mm, and sporting 1193cc and 1405cc engines in its petrol and diesel variants respectively, just about qualifies as a small car. And the benefits of a favorable tax regime are evident in the sub-four-lakh rupees price of the base petrol variant, almost a lakh less than its bigger cousin. The base diesel variant isn't much costlier, retailing for Rs4.25 lakh in Mumbai before the Budget. The Indigo was never a great looker, but the CS has markedly improved on this front, These include "a stylish new tail light cluster in the rear embedded in a smart new rear profile completed with a new, trimmer rear bumper", in the words of Tata Motors. One can also differentiate it from the older Indigo even when not looking at its profile, thanks to the new front grille coupled with new headlamps, The petrol variant is equipped with 1.19L MPFI engine, which delivers 65bhp while the diesel car with a 1.4L turbo-diesel, churns out 70bhp. Not very impressive, agreed, but certainly adequate for city driving. And as for the people who count their fuel bills, the new Indigo CS delivers even better mileage than its thrifty predecessor. One can reasonably expect fuel efficiency figures of around 14 kilometres per litre (kmpl) in the city and 19 kmpl on the highway for the diesel variant, and 3 kmpl lesser on average for the petrol model, The shorter length translates to a better parking experience in cramped urban spaces, and also produces a tighter driving experience. Tata Motors hasn't stinted on the suspension, and the Indigo CS gets independent McPherson struts both in the front and rear. This translates to a smoother ride even over distressed roads. But the problem of the rickety trim and poor build persists, and shows up in the handling of the car. The suspension also intrudes into the boot space and ends up cramping its length. The 25kg reduction in weight due to the 162mm reduction in length does improve the mileage marginally and the handling even less so, The car is available in seven attractive colours, attractively named scarlet red, sparkling gold, mica grey, carbon black, cosmic blue, mint white and artric sillver.
